To collaborate with students to compose an original composition.
Workshops are held over 4-5 one hour sessions.
The initial session begins with an informal performance and general discussions and exercises to help build a rapport with the group. I will also establish behaviour expectations and ways of working co-operatively.
Next we will brainstorm ideas for our song. These ideas can be based on subjects related to the curriculum, preferably subjects and information that all students are familiar with and have covered in class earlier in the year. Preferred music styles and genres are also explored.
Prior to the next session I will prepare and compose the music based on these discussions. I will be open to any ideas the students have regarding the melody, composition and arrangement of the music.
Sessions 2-3Next we will begin bringing the lyrics into the music. I will encourage input from all students and allow the lyrical styles to be a reflection of the students own language and communication. This will further ensure the students take ownership of the song.
My aim is to have the song completed by the end of session 4 in readiness for the following session’s activities.
The final sessions are set aside for the fine tuning and rehearsal of the song in preparation for the culminating activities of the workshop. These activities could include a performance at school or alternatively a professional recording of the song.
The size of the group is negotiable, subject to student needs, age range and group dynamics. But in general I am willing to take a full class of up to 30 students particularly if the school aims to involve every pupil in the school.
